Working Better Together: TRIO/GEAR UP and the College Advising Corps Chris Beggs

College Advising Corps works to increase the number of low-income, first-generation college, and underrepresented high school students who enter and complete higher education. We do this through two innovative program models. Our in-school model places well-trained, recent college graduates from our 34 partner universities as full-time college advisers in high schools across the nation. As you can see, we are in a unique position to partner with your program to meet shared objectives. We also love to hire your graduates to work in our program full-time. IN this session, you'll receive an overview of the College Advising Corps, hear first-hand how we partner with TRIO/Gear Up programs to accomplish shared goals, and refer your upcoming graduates to high-impact, entry-level full-time positions in education.

Using Technology to Enhance Your TRIO/GEAR UP Program: 2022 Edition Mike Conley

Technology is ubiquitous, touching almost every part of our lives, our communities, and our homes. Yet most TRIO programs lag far behind when it comes to integrating technology into our programs. Properly used, technology can help TRIO personnel change the way services are provided and can enhance the relationship between our programs’ staff and students. In this workshop participants will: 1) gain a better understanding of free/low-cost apps that will increase productivity, student engagement, and program visibility; and 2) will learn practical examples of how to implement these technologies into our TRIO programs

Using STEM Tech for Recruitment & Engagement in Pre-College Programs Whitney Wolk Maddux

It can be difficult to grab the attention of students at a recruitment event. Consider using STEM tech to catch students' eyes and create curiosity and interest. The same tools can then be used in group sessions with students to keep them engaged in the program. This is a hands-on session where we will "play" with some of the tech one Talent Search program uses to connect and engage with students. Examples include Sphero balls, Ozobots, and 3D pens.

Be Comfortable with What We Don't Know While Striving to Engage and Learn Gregory York Roberts

A book review on inclusion. Jennifer Brown has an inclusion model that provides ideas, guidance, and directions when serving on diversity committees and when being an advocate in your variety of roles that you serve at your institutions. This model suggests that we seek to learn how we can improve our knowledge, skills, and competencies to better support our colleagues, the institutions we serve, and the people around us. The stages of the model illustrate how anyone can begin to shift their thinking, gain new perspectives, use their voice, and take meaningful action to create cultures of belonging.

Best Practices of Financial Literacy and Education Cheryl Rauh

In 2008, the Higher Education Act implemented new requirements for financial and economic literacy education and counseling. At that time, the Pell Institute and the University of Southern California conducted an exploratory study of the TRIO financial education landscape, finding few programs aligned with best practices of financial education. This session seeks to update TRIO professionals on current research in financial education and literacy and best practices they can assure are built into their own programs to better support student development of financial skills and knowledge. Core topics will be timing, frequency, and resources for programming.
